On the south side of the Arno in Florence lie the Boboli Gardens (Giardino di Boboli) behind the Pitti Palace
. The Boboli Gardens were laid out for the wife of Cosimo 1st de Medici, Eleonora di Toledo, in the 16th century. Consisting of shaded walkways and statues at each junction

Although there is no natural water source within the grounds the garden’s designers created an elaborate irriagtion system taking water from the river Arno so as to water the plants and create several water features within the gardens including fountains and a lake.
