In just a few days time this small pocket of London will be swarming with rowers, each battling it out for the title of Head of the River 2010. Good luck to all, especially the ones I want to do well!

Awake before sunrise and straight into the action, this is the life of a dedicated athlete.

Sunrise brings flames of mist as is burns off the still cool water of the night…silence all around save the thunk-swish, thunk-swish…

Finally a picture, I hear you cry…! Hammersmith Bridge in London when I was up there for a race the other week…at some horrendous hour. You can tell because the water is only ever flat at 6am-7am, and subsequently choppy as ever [as other rowers on this stretch of river know this only too well]. Thankfully the weather held out for a glorious day. The one time its sunny and I’m out racing…sod’s law but there you go…I got at least one half decent shot out of the weekend.

Its that time of year again when many dedicated parents, brothers, sisters, cousins and friends stand for hours on the river banks patiently waiting for an all too brief glimpse as the crews race past, and then only to be obscured by a tree or hedge as they continue off down the course. Brave souls present in all weathers. Then its a brisk walk back to the car for a thermos of hot chocolate…its all worth it in the end!
Thanks for watching all these years…

I put my camera to one side momentarily (letting someone else man the controls!) for the only other activity that would make me do so, and went racing at the weekend…with a rather unexpected result…
