Blue Blur

Back on the nature photography trail again after the superb wedding last weekend. I got up at an insanely early time to leave London, primarily to make it to this location in time for sunrise but also ensuring I would avoid the Congestion Charge, a bonus! With the days getting longer as the summer takes hold that magical hour around sunrise gets much earlier. It could be argued though that this is a good thing almost always guaranteeing somewhere to yourself. Very few people are dedicated enough to rise for first light when it comes around 5am and any good photographer knows to be there before the sun rises to ensure the best composition for when that attractive warm glow appears. The summer can be a little punishing on the most ardent nature photographer but the rewards out-weigh the early rises.

This particular location was awash with bluebells, though this year they seem rather late and less bountiful than previous years but the aroma within the woods – even at that early hour – was incredible. I suspect the late bloom is due to the sudden drop in temperature (it was 2C according to the gauge in the car!) but no matter, I got to work and decided to try something different for a change rather than the ‘done before’ clichéd shots. This particular image was made around 15mins before the sun came up, with enough light to evenly illuminate the woodland for the colours to come through. The effect was made entirely in-camera and not with the use of any software.

Volcanic Sunset

Slant

It might be something to do with the dust thrown up by the barely pronounceable Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull but the sunsets over recent days have been spectacular. So, despite the knee-jerk air travel doom-mongers out there who crippled the travel plans of thousands, lets make the most of it back on home turf and enjoy one of nature’s little wonders.

Wedged!

Wedged

Just a test shot from a location down on the coast, I spotted these stones caught between the branches of a tree washed up on the rocks, they were firmly wedged in there and wouldn’t budge when I went in for a closer inspection. I waited for the sun to drop below the clouds that were hovering over the horizon to add just a splash of colour and light to the proceedings. I’ve made a note of the place with the intention of returning and to spend more time exploring the fascinating shapes the rest of the driftwood made

Silver Birch

During a walk through the Rothiemurchus Forest around Loch an Eileen the pine woods gave way to a dense area of moss covered silver birch. The lingering mist lent a rather pleasing soft light to the scene.

Suspension Sunset

Suspension Sunset

I was in Bristol the other day to see a friend and drop into the gallery to see if there was anything to catch up on. I couldn’t resist a quick image of the familiar Clifton Suspension Bridge at sunset during a brief wander at the end of the day. The soft pinks and purples in the sky lasted only a few minutes before the sun dipped below the horizon behind me, by sheer chance the lights on the bridge came on just before I make this image as well.

Quartz Veins ii

I headed down to the beach in search of a location I had seen on a previous trip, with a particular image in mind I set off to find it. Curiously though I changed my plans when I came across outcrops of rock all criss-crossed with quartz. One mound of exposed rock grabbed my attention in particular, the softer dark stone having been eroded away to expose the quartz veins and interesting patterns within. With a bright sunset occurring behind me I turned my attention and camera towards the rocks for further study, the delicate pinks from the sky set off the quartz and gently illuminated the smoothed pebbles caught in the cracks and fissures. Since photography is the creation of an image during a passage of time (regardless of it’s length), the relationship between photography and quartz is linked through our arbitrary labeling of increments as it passes. There is so much more at this location than I originally believed, I think a return visit is on the cards…
