Rather than a lengthy description of each image I shall summarise; these are all items picked up from around the Somme region of France following the First World War. Cases and cases of helmets, bayonets, badges and other rusting artefacts found in the fields from, most likely, fallen soldiers. In one instance a map outlined the journey of one soldier from England, across the channel, south through France, up into the north of the Somme where he was killed…

Its not all massive landscapes and snow drifts out here, the low temperatures transform everything. A quick wander into the woods not far from where I’m staying reveals things worth a second glance. Under sheets of ice and mounds of snow a stream burbled away, only revealed in certain places where it flowed over larger rocks that the ice could not grip to. Being careful not to slip and/or fall through the ice I set up this shot, getting in close for a more intimate view of things…

Another great thing about this time of year is all the wildlife you can spot, getting going early on a cool crisp morning can rarely be beaten. Yes, it can be a struggle getting out of a warm bed but the rewards can be immense. It is certainly the best time to go out searching for things…on a still morning sounds travel for miles, so if you’re careful and quiet you can hear all manner of things before they’re upon you. I’ve hidden in hedges and spotted deer racing across fields and had birds of prey wheeling above me as the hunt in the morning light. Even if the wildlife is sleeping in (!) you can almost always find small treasures at your feet…

Its that time of year again, bluebells are out in force. Seems like they’re everywhere in the woods, great in the soft evening light that starts to come through after the April showers…more than worth the wait in the car for it to pass.
