Happy New Year Everyone!! Hope you all had a great Christmas and were warm, well fed and entertained throughout. Well, As you may have noticed there’s been a bit of a change around here. The website has had a (rather premature one might suggest given current conditions around the UK) spring clean. The upshot is it should be much easier to find things in the site, as well as viewing across browser platforms (including mobile devices) and from now on images will be sightly larger so you get to enjoy them that much more. Have a poke around and if you see something broken just get in touch and I’ll fix it soon as I can.

As I write much of the UK is under a thick blanket of snow, though inevitably this has crippled pretty much the entire country. Incapable of preparing for adverse conditions people continue to slide amusingly down steep hills behind their steering wheels vainly struggling to get to work. Just take the day off people, it’s so much easier! I headed out with the dog who found the white stuff great fun to play around in! Here’s to the new year and onwards, Keep an eye out for my photographic review of 2009 in the next post or two…

New business cards arrived today!! They are nice and thick and weighty, I believe around 400gsm for those in the know. A big thanks to goodprint.co.uk for these, the quality far outstrips that of my previous ones, and will certainly leave the impression of quality I intend as befits the time and effort I put into my photos [not to mention the expected quality of the work itself!]. It’s very important to leave a good impression with prospective customers. It certainly pays for them to take away a good quality business card with your contact details, perhaps brief summary of your skills too so they know what you’re capable of. As to the design, I made it fit my website’s new look – with a space left for scribbling notes, as some people like to do…

In all, very cool. The down side? They’re so new I’ve not handed any out yet!!!

Well, the newly redesigned site is almost (99.99%) ready to roll out. I’ve tried to keep things simple and tidy (as they are now) for ease of use, all the while hoping I don’t break something or limit its functionality along the way…far too easy to do, it transpires. Well, keep your eye’s peeled…

But in a good way. I’ve completed a project on a subject not far from where I live and I’m trying to finish off two papers, a presentation and various other things, all whilst training to race over the summer. But its been good, just neglected the postings here annoyingly. So, without further ado I have a shot I took almost 2 years ago but its one of my favourites from an evening fishing with my dad…good times.

…My photographic project consisted of capturing dozens of different views of a subject I’ve seen and shot many times before but this time I really looked closely at its different forms and shapes as it sits there marking the land. Used every day by hundreds, thousands maybe?, and yet hardly a thought into its monumental importance, despite the fact its originator never saw the finished article… unfortunately these pages could hardly pay tribute to the size of my finished article, the final image was more than 100 megapixels in dimension (+100,000 pixels per edge – its a square image) and when framed will fill a rather large chunk of wall space I believe! I’ll try and find a way of presenting it here so you know what I mean

Further good news; I learned recently an image of mine will be used in the foyer of the Hotel du Vin in Bristol. All 4 foot square of it. woohoo!

Well, its been quite a year since I started this blog, a moment to reflect perhaps…It all kicked off with a trip to Russia where I endured -20C to -30C temperatures and learned about the fate of the Russian Royal family (as well as a conference I was there for…!), this was swiftly followed by a lunar eclipse.
As spring and summer rolled on trips to local woodlands brought bluebells aplenty fantastic looking sunsets and wedding bells on three occasions – only one of which in this country (I’ll have to start stipulating I only work over-seas!). Print sales started to build up steadily through the gallery, serene evening walks fly-fishing with my dad just taking in the warmth at the end of the day, winding down after busy weeks at work finishing off talks and posters for conferences.
The allure of rushing water became irresistible once again and I returned to rowing for a few months to have a crack at seeing if I still had it in me, despite a bout of some horrible bug causing me to loose 5-6kg(!), turns out I do and managed to win a couple of races in the process…not bad after not doing much for 3 years or so, I’m back training hard again for next season…as any athlete would confess; its an addiction. I entered the Wildlife Photography of the Year competition for the first time and got four, of my eight I entered, images through to the semi-final stage…sadly no further but I’m inspired enough to enter again, and in much the same vein as the rowing; get a stage further! There’s so many other things I could mention but suffice to say its been great. No idea what the future holds but there’s a few things I’m pondering at the moment, either way onwards and upwards for an even more successful year!!!

Lastly thanks to everyone kind enough to leave a comment on here, its always nice to hear from people taking an interest in my photos and taking in what they have to say, stay in touch and keep checking back!
